a sculptural practice in disguise
in a city known for meticulous craftsmanship and refined restraint, 「mug dealer」 chooses disruption. led by tokyo-based duo studio utomo pyk, this collaborative project distorts the everyday mug into something more ambiguous, more tender, more strange. these are not vessels designed for uniform shelves or mass appeal. they bulge with personality.
slant with intention. some teeter on the edge of collapse. others challenge the very idea of function. and yet - somehow - they still feel right in your hand.
細部まで作り込まれたクラフトと、洗練された抑制美で知られるこの街で、「mug dealer」はあえて“ずらし”を選びました。東京を拠点とするスタジオ・ユトモ・ピックによるこの共同プロジェクトは、日常のマグをもっと曖昧に、もっと優しく、もっと奇妙な存在へと変換します。それらは均一な棚に並べられるための器ではありません。個性を抱え、傾き、よろめき、ときには機能そのものを疑います。それでも、なぜか手に持つとしっくりくるのです。
「mug dealer」 isn’t trying to impress you. they’re trying to remind you - that objects can hold contradiction. that art can be domestic. that craft can laugh a little.
born from chaos and honed through quiet precision, each mug sits at the intersection of sculpture and sarcasm, ritual and rebellion. there’s always a wink in the glaze. a sense that beauty doesn’t have to behave.
it just has to feel honest.
混沌から生まれ、静かな精度で磨かれたマグたちは、彫刻と皮肉、儀式と反抗の交差点に立っています。釉薬のどこかに、いつもウィンクが潜んでいる。美しさはお行儀よくなくていい。

we started by messing with tradition—making bright, bloated versions of coil-built vessels. then came cacca, our silly phase: mugs and lamps that look like they’ve had too much to eat. it’s all part of the experiment.
